Baltic Data Center, a leader in the management of data centers and information systems in the Baltic States, installed a liquid-cooled data center, distinguished by its environmental performance and energy savings. The first data center of this type in the Baltic States will allow saving up to 3 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.
The liquid-cooled data center in Vilnius was installed after having upgraded the data center that had been functioning on the basis of old technology. About LTL 2 million were invested into the upgrade.
According to Saulius Markūnas, Director of Baltic Data Center, a company belonging to TEO LT, AB Group of companies, the cooling of the data center with liquid allowed to substantially increase its efficiency - the major part of its premises were allocated for servers, not the cooling equipment. "The environmental aspect was also very important for choosing the technology, because, having chosen the latest technologies, the amount of energy saved will be equal to that consumed on average by approximately 1000 families", - S. Markūnas said.
Conventional data centers are cooled with the air, the cooling of which consumes up to three quarters of the electric energy required for the operation of servers. A special liquid is used, which "absorbs" the heat emitted by server processors and later cools down outdoors or in special cooling equipment.
The new liquid-cooling system constantly monitors the temperature of servers and respectively adjusts the supplied quantity of the cooled liquid. Energy efficiency is also ensured by the possibility to simply cool the liquid outdoors, when the air temperature is below 10°C.
Intelligent engineering solutions company Fima, which installed the liquid-cooled data center, welcomes the fact that there are modern-thinking companies in Lithuania which bravely choose energy-antaefficient solutions that have not yet been applied in Lithuania. "The cooling solutions traditionally implemented in data centers in Lithuania provide cooling to the whole premises of a data center, and this is not efficient. The solution implemented by our company provides targeted cooling only to server rack equipment and uses the outdoor air, which costs nothing", - Valdas Vrubliauskas, Director of Automation and Data Transfer Solutions Department of Fima, said.
According to him, cool weather conditions in Lithuania even more increase the efficiency of the installed cooling solution, because the outdoor air can be used for cooling the data center for almost half of a year.
In the upgraded data center, there were installed a duplicated 10 Gbps (Gigabit per second) internal data distribution, uninterrupted power supply sources and an electricity generator, and also duplicated cooling, ventilation and many other systems, so when one link becomes dysfunctional it is replaced by a duplicate one.
Last week, during the international conference Data Centres Europe, Baltic Data Center was announced as the best regional data center operator in Central and Eastern Europe. The innovations implemented by the company, including an underground data center protected against electromagnetic radiation, the only of this kind in Eastern Europe, were also nominated at the Awards.
